Who is Emelia?
I was named after my late Haitian maternal great grandmother, Melia Dume. I am 22 years young and a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health. Currently, I am applying to Physical Therapy schools to pursue a career as a Physical Therapist. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, to my father, Andrew J. Chatfield Sr. and Haitian mother, Ketelie Arre-Chatfield. I am the second born of three children. My elder brother, Andrew Jr. alum of Oregon State and an esteem football player, and younger sister, Britney, 800-meter collegiate runner majoring in Psychology. I graduated high school from St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where I hold the record in the 100m hurdles and was a state champion in the 300m hurdles. Furthermore, I received a full scholarship and was the first in my family to attend UT. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, reading, and spending time outdoors when I am not training. Even with my past accomplishments, my aspiration has always been to compete as an Olympian for Haiti, my mother’s homeland. This dream and goal became more apparent after visiting Haiti with my family. Haiti, having faced numerous adversities and being the first republic to achieve freedom from slavery, has a rich history that I am proud to be part of. At this stage in my life, running is my talent, and I want to use it to inspire other young Haitian athletes. By being an example, I aim to show them that their dreams are achievable. Moreover, amid the political unrest in Haiti, I intend to bring some joy, light, and hope to the Haitian community through my athletic endeavors.
